How Do You Know You Love Someone? The 5 Stages Nobody Warns You About

How Do You Know You Love Someone? The 5 Stages Nobody Warns You About

Posted on July 28, 2026July 28, 2026 by Author

A friend of mine once asked me, “How did you know? Like, the actual moment you knew you loved him?”

I opened my mouth to answer and realized… there wasn’t one moment. There were five. And most of them didn’t feel like what I expected love to feel like at all.

Nobody talks about this part. We’re sold this idea that love arrives like a lightning bolt. You just know, instantly, dramatically. For some people, maybe that’s true. But for most of us, love is a process with stages, and if you don’t recognize them, it’s easy to walk right through one and think, “well, that didn’t feel like love, so I guess it wasn’t.”

If you’re trying to figure out where you stand with someone, here’s the honest map, the one nobody hands you.

5-stages-of-falling-in-love-how-to-know-if-you-love-someone-safe-space.

Stage 1: The Noticing Stage

This is the one everyone knows. Your attention keeps sliding back to them. You reread their texts. You remember tiny details: the way they laughed at their own joke, what song was playing when you first talked.

This isn’t love yet. This is your brain flagging someone as interesting. It feels intense, but intensity isn’t the same as depth. This stage is loud. Love, later on, gets quiet.

How to know you’re here: You feel excited but you don’t actually know them that well yet. You’re in love with potential, not a person.

Stage 2: The Testing Stage

This is where most people get scared and either run or cling too hard. You start showing small, real pieces of yourself: an opinion you’re not sure they’ll agree with, a flaw, a bad day and watching how they respond.

This stage isn’t romantic. It can feel uncertain, even disappointing at times. But it’s necessary. You cannot love someone you haven’t tested reality against yet. You can only love a fantasy of them.

How to know you’re here: You catch yourself thinking, “let’s see how they handle this,” even if you don’t say it out loud.

Stage 3: The Familiar Stage

The butterflies calm down. This is the stage that scares people the most, because it can feel like the relationship is “dying” when really, it’s just maturing.

You stop getting nervous before they call. You can sit in silence with them without it feeling awkward. This is often mistaken for falling out of love, when actually, it’s often the first real sign love is starting to take root. Comfort isn’t the enemy of love, it’s usually where love actually begins to grow roots deep enough to survive real life.

How to know you’re here: You feel calm around them more than you feel nervous. If you’re panicking about that calmness, that panic is the thing to examine, not the calmness itself.

Stage 4: The Choosing Stage

This is the stage people skip past mentally, but it’s arguably the most important one. Somewhere in here, love stops being a feeling that happens to you and becomes something you actively do.

You have an annoying day. They’re distracted, a little short with you. The old spark-chasing version of you might’ve felt doubt creep in. But instead, you find yourself choosing patience. Choosing to ask what’s wrong instead of assuming the worst. Choosing them, actively, on a day when it would’ve been easier not to.

How to know you’re here: You notice yourself making small, quiet decisions in their favor. Decisions nobody else even sees  without resenting it.

Stage 5: The Knowing Stage

This is the one people are usually actually asking about. It doesn’t arrive with fireworks. It arrives more like this: you’re doing something completely unrelated: washing dishes, driving, half-asleep, and the thought just surfaces on its own, plain and certain: I love this person.

No drama. No question mark at the end of it. Just a fact your body already knew before your mind caught up.

How to know you’re here: You’re not asking “do I love them?” anymore in a panicked way, you’re asking it out of curiosity, almost like double-checking something you already suspect is true.

A Quick Self-Check

If you’re still not sure which stage you’re in, ask yourself these three questions honestly:

  1. Do I feel more like myself around them, or less? Love tends to make people more themselves, not less.
  2. Would I still care about their wellbeing if I got nothing back from them today? Real love isn’t transactional, even in small ways.
  3. Has my care for them survived a version of them that wasn’t at their best? If yes, that’s not infatuation. Infatuation doesn’t survive bad days. Love does.

If your honest answers lean toward stages 3, 4, or 5, you’re not confused. You’re in it. You just might’ve expected it to feel more like Stage 1 forever, and it doesn’t. It’s not supposed to.

The truth most people need to hear

Love doesn’t stay loud. If you’re waiting to feel that Stage 1 intensity permanently before you’ll believe it’s real, you might talk yourself out of something good simply because it grew up.

The quiet, steady, “I choose you even today” kind of love? That’s not a lesser version of love. That’s the version that actually lasts.
